Open Positions

We currently have openings for all positions: postdocs, graduate students and interns. We are looking for team members who are motivated by, interested in and excited about quantum materials! We are an experimental group, but we do some of our own theory and often collaborate closely with theorists. Therefore, if you like both theory and experiment we might work well together!

Below is specific information for postdocs, graduate students and interns. Important: if you are not sure if you meet all the ‘requirements,’ but are excited by our research, and believe we could do interesting things together, don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Postdocs

We are interested in hiring postdocs with a very strong background in condensed matter physics, and interest in our research. We are looking for postdocs who enjoy working independently, but are also excited to be a part of a growing team, and learn new techniques.

Ideally a candidate would be technically proficient and experienced in (at least) one of the following: synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, magnetic scattering, laser-based optical measurements (e.g. pump probe, polarimetry, spin-noise spectroscopy), transport experiments, strain, and work with 2D materials.

If you are interested, please get in touch with “Postdoc Inquiry” in the subject line. Tell me a little about your background (attach a CV), your past research and why are you interested in SPQM! If we think we could work well together, we will explore various fellowship options, both internal at ISTA and Austria and EU-wide. However, getting one of those is not a prerequisite to join the group.

Graduate Students

Candidates with a strong background in condensed matter physics (both Bachelor’s or Master’s degree) are encouraged to apply to the Graduate School of ISTA. Once admitted into the graduate program, students spend their first year working in 3-4 different research groups. This provides a great opportunity to explore and expand your research interests.

If you are specifically interested in our group, and would like to discuss possible projects even before applying to the graduate school, don’t hesitate to get in touch, with “PhD inquiry” in the subject line! Tell me a little bit about yourself (attach a CV), your interests and past experience, and feel free to ask any questions you might have, about ISTA or SPQM.

Interns

If you are enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in physics, chemistry, material science or engineering, or have just finished it, and would like to try your hand at research in quantum materials, an internship (up to a year) in our group might be a good option. There are also shorter summer internships available, funded by ISTA.

If you are interested in an internship, please get in touch, with “Internship Inquiry” in the subject line, and tell me a little bit about yourself, your educational background, past research experience (if you have any – this might become the first!), and why would you like to be an intern with us!
